Dr Marais has recently published an article about this issue in the South African Dental Journal. The essence of it all is that a proper diagnosis is all important to prevent harm being done. One unnecessary root canal treatment is one too many! Some pain conditions have very obscure origins. This may or may not be associated with the teeth. It is extremely important to identify the offending tooth correctly. It is just as important to rule out the teeth as a cause of pain when that is the case otherwise unnecessary treatment will be carried out.
