+ What is a root canal treatment? It is the removal of the tooth's nerve which is housed in the centre of the tooth and the filling of the cavity with a specific material. + But will it hurt? Root canal treatment has to be performed under proper anaesthesia and should be a painless procedure. Only rarely are teeth which are difficult to numb encountered, in which case special techniques are utilised to overcome the problem. + How much will it cost? A simple root canal treatment on a front tooth can cost around R5000. More difficult cases on back teeth can cost more that R10 000. + How successful is root canal treatment? Properly done root canal treatments are almost 100% successful. Failures do occur however and re-treatments can be done and the success rates of re-treatment are better than 85%. + My problem is that I have already had root canal treatment but the tooth still hurts. What now? Failures of root canal treatment do occur but these can be managed by experts. A skilled practitioner can redo the root canal treatment by conventional means but in rare cases surgery is involved. + What is orofacial pain?
